Ausgangsort der Touren in den Nationalpark ist Barreirinhas. Man kann entweder mit dem Linienbus von São Luís fahren (19 R$, ca. 4 ½ Stunden Fahrt, da er bei jeder Hütte unterwegs anhält). Es gibt jedoch auch die Möglichkeit mit einem Van zu fahren (in São Luís im Reisebüro oder Touri-Info fragen), der nur 25 R$ kostet, die Strecke in 3 ½ Stunden schafft und einen vor allem von Tür zu Tür fährt.
In Barreirinhas gibt es einige Pousadas, die meisten an der Hauptstraße gelegen. Der Ort befindet sich anscheinend in einer Übergangsphase vom verschlafenen Dschungelnest zur Touristenattraktion. Die Mischung ist ganz witzig, es wird versucht den Besuchern etwas zu bieten, aber vieles ist doch noch sehr improvisiert.

Pousada Igarapé wollte für ein Doppelzimmer 70 R$, konnte aber auf 55 R$ gedrückt werden. Großes Zimmer, Airco, Bad. Die Anlage sieht ziemlich neu aus. Das Frühstück ist gut.

[edit] In die Dünen

Es gibt mehrere Anbieter für Fahrten in die Dünen.
Eco Dunas (rua Inácio Lins, 164) hat verschiedene Lagunen im Programm, oder eine Fahrt mit dem Boot den Fluss runter.
Fahrt zu Lagoa Bonita (35 R$). Mit einem abenteuerlichen Fahrzeug, einer Art Pickup mit überdachten Sitzen auf der Ladefläche, durch die Dünen. Das Auto schlingert durch den Sand, bleibt ständig fast stecken und ist mehrfach kurz vor dem Umkippen. Großer Spaß!

Der Wasserstand der Lagunen hängt vom Regen ab. Nach längerer Trockenzeit sind viele Lagunen komplett ausgetrocknet, die Ziele der Ausflugsfahrten Lagoa do Peixe oder Lagoa Bonita haben aber immer Wasser. Bei genügend Wasserstand kann man wunderbar schwimmen, mit dem Gefühl mitten in der Wüste zu sein. Sonnenschutz und Hut dringend erforderlich.

[edit] An die Küste

Mit einem langsamen Linienschiff kann man an die Küste nach Caburé und Atins fahren. Wem das zu langsam oder zeitlich zu unpassend ist, der kann sehr schnell aber teurer mit Außenborderbooten auch dahin. Caburé liegt auf einer Landzunge zwischen Fluss und Meer und besteht nur aus einem halben Dutzend Pousadas. Atins ist ein kleiner Ort mit mindestens 2 Pousadas, von dort kann man direkt in die Lençóis spazieren. Vom Leuchtturm nahebei hat man eine imposante Aussicht. Von Caburé kann man mit einem Jeep nach Paulino Neves oder Tutóia fahren (am besten in den Pousadas fragen, wann einer fährt um die Kosten zu teilen).
